Overview

The Bank of Thailand's digital baht initiative represents its central bank digital currency programme. Initial work involved wholesale CBDC experiments through Project Inthanon and the multi-jurisdictional mBridge cross-border settlement platform. A subsequent retail CBDC pilot examined the complete lifecycle of a retail CBDC using real-value transactions, limited to a specific group of financial service providers, authorised users and merchants, employing technology from Giesecke+Devrient. The central bank issued a concluding report on this retail pilot, with results intended to guide future Thai payment infrastructure rather than indicating an immediate rollout. Separately, the Bank of Thailand has operated a programmable payment sandbox to test baht-backed stablecoins.
