Overview
Astar Network was designed as a smart contract hub within the Polkadot ecosystem, functioning as a parachain with ASTR as its native token. The project is led by Sota Watanabe and his team. Originally launched under the name Plasm Network, it was rebranded to Astar Network in September 2021, with its mainnet going live on 17 January 2022. A key technical feature is its dual support for both EVM and WASM smart contract environments, enabling seamless migration of Ethereum-based applications while also supporting WASM-native contracts, underpinning its role as a multi-chain smart contract hub. ASTR serves as a gas fee token, a governance token for proposing and voting on network policies, and a staking reward. The network’s distinctive economic model, dApp staking, incentivizes stakers to delegate ASTR to specific dApps and infrastructure, directly supporting developers while earning rewards. The project began as Plasm Network, rebranded in September 2021, and launched its mainnet on 17 January 2022 as a Polkadot parachain.
