Overview
Paul Ginsparg, a physicist, established arXiv in August 1991 during his tenure at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The platform began as a preprint server for high-energy physics, but subsequently broadened its scope to encompass mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, statistics, economics, and additional disciplines. Ginsparg relocated to Cornell University in 2001, and arXiv was integrated into the university's library system. In 2019, the repository moved to Cornell Tech. By 2026, arXiv had transitioned into an independent non-profit entity, retaining its base at Cornell Tech's Tata Innovation Center, and had surpassed three million total submissions.
