Overview
The ENS DAO, which oversees the Ethereum Name Service, came into being with the introduction of the $ENS governance token on 8 November 2021. At that time, the token supply was divided: 25% was airdropped to .eth domain name holders, while 50%—amounting to 50 million ENS—was set aside for the DAO treasury. Of that treasury allocation, 10% was accessible immediately, with the rest unlocking in equal portions over four years starting from the token launch date. The airdrop period, during which eligible parties could claim their tokens, ended on 4 May 2022. By that deadline, 103,000 addresses had claimed a total of 19.6 million ENS; the 5.4 million tokens that went unclaimed were subsequently moved into the DAO treasury. Those who had claimed their tokens were then able to vote on the ENS DAO Constitution, a framework of binding rules that defines permissible governance actions. This constitution was approved in November 2021, with 84,350 wallets casting 15 million votes in favour, representing 97% support. The combination of a substantial treasury, a constitutionally bounded governance structure, and a widely distributed airdrop positioned the ENS DAO as a frequently referenced model for decentralised autonomous organisations.
