Overview
An early decentralized autonomous organization operating on the Ethereum blockchain, The DAO functioned as a venture capital vehicle under the control of its token holders. A flaw in its smart contract code was exploited in 2016, resulting in a significant loss of funds. This incident prompted a contentious hard fork of Ethereum, which gave rise to the Ethereum Classic network.
