Overview
In September 2025, the Polkadot community approved Referendum 1710 via the network's "Wish For Change" mechanism, with roughly 81% support, to replace DOT's unlimited issuance with a fixed supply cap of 2.1 billion tokens. Previously, the network minted approximately 120 million DOT annually without a maximum. The new inflation schedule begins March 14, 2026, with reductions every two years, starting with a roughly 52.6% decrease. By 2040, the total supply is projected to reach about 1.91 billion DOT, compared to over 3.4 billion under the prior system.
