Overview
More than 300 distinct wallets participated in draining roughly $190 million from the Nomad cross-chain bridge on 1 August 2022, after a contract upgrade inadvertently set a trusted root to zero. This allowed the bridge to honour withdrawal messages lacking any proof. The exploit was straightforward to replicate, enabling numerous addresses to substitute their own details into the attacker's initial transaction and deplete the bridge within hours. The incident ranks among the biggest bridge hacks ever; authorities later arrested a primary suspect in Israel and extradited him to the United States.
