Brazil ANPD Worldcoin Order event

regulatory-ban · PageRank 0.0000

Overview

Brazil's national data protection authority, the ANPD, issued an order on 24 January 2025 directing Tools for Humanity, the firm operating the Worldcoin/World iris-scanning identity initiative, to cease offering cryptocurrency or any financial reward for the collection of biometric data within the country. The directive became effective on 25 January 2025. The ANPD determined that providing monetary compensation for biometric data contravenes Brazil's General Data Protection Law (LGPD), as financial inducements may compromise the free and informed consent mandated by the legislation. The authority also cited the permanent nature of biometric data collection and the potential harm to economically vulnerable individuals. Tools for Humanity subsequently terminated its operations in Brazil.
