Worldcoin Global Launch event
Overview
Worldcoin became publicly available on 24 July 2023, after enrolling approximately two million participants during a preliminary testing period. The initiative was established by Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, together with Alex Blania and Max Novendstern, and is operated by the firm Tools for Humanity. It generates a digital identification credential, termed World ID, for individuals who submit to an iris scan performed by a chrome device known as the Orb, and provides WLD tokens to those who complete verification. The project aims to offer a method of confirming human identity that can differentiate actual people from artificial intelligence systems on the internet, and its creators have also suggested the prospect of AI-funded universal basic income. At the time of launch, roughly 143 million WLD were in circulation from a total supply of 10 billion, with 75% of that total designated for the community.
