BuilderNet protocol
Overview
Flashbots has launched BuilderNet, a decentralised block-building network for Ethereum, with its initial mainnet release run by Flashbots, Beaverbuild and Nethermind. The network aims to address centralisation in Ethereum's proposer-builder separation framework, where two builders—Beaverbuild and Titan Builder—were constructing approximately 88% of blocks when BuilderNet was announced. In the system, each node operates its own block-building instance within a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), enabling nodes to share order flow while maintaining transaction privacy and coordinating to redistribute MEV and gas fees rather than concentrating them with one builder. Users receive refunds corresponding to the value their order flow contributes to the blocks' final value. Flashbots has indicated it intends to apply the model to layer 2s through Rollup-Boost, aiming to improve access to decentralised sequencing, and that node operation will eventually become permissionless.
