Overview
Coinbase, the largest US-based cryptocurrency exchange by customer count, was established in June 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam. Armstrong had previously worked at Airbnb, while Ehrsam was a former Goldman Sachs trader; the company received early support from Y Combinator. The platform serves both retail and institutional clients, enabling them to buy, sell, store, and trade digital assets, and reports over 100 million users. On 14 April 2021, Coinbase went public via a direct listing on the Nasdaq exchange under the ticker COIN, with a reference price of $250 and a closing price of $328.28 on its first day. The exchange obtained a New York BitLicense in 2017. In 2023, the SEC filed an enforcement action against Coinbase concerning its staking and exchange operations; that action was dismissed by the SEC in 2025.
