Group of Twenty organization
Overview
First convened in Berlin in December 1999, the G20 was formally created on 26 September that year as a response to the financial crises that struck emerging economies in the late 1990s. The intergovernmental forum, which focuses on international economic cooperation, comprises 19 sovereign states, the European Union and, as of 2023, the African Union. It now holds annual summits of heads of state and government. The body's agenda addresses international financial stability, sustainable development and climate policy; under India's 2023 presidency it has also taken on a greater role in coordinating global oversight of crypto-assets.
