Also known as: Jasper CBDC, Bank of Canada DLT

Overview

The Bank of Canada and Payments Canada, in conjunction with R3 and several Canadian financial institutions, conducted Project Jasper, an experimental initiative to assess whether distributed ledger technology could facilitate wholesale interbank payment settlement. The project gained attention as an early instance of a central bank engaging with the private sector on a DLT trial. During Phases I and II, carried out in 2016 and 2017, the participants evaluated a prototype built on Ethereum against R3's Corda platform for processing high-value payments. Phase III, which took place in 2018 alongside TMX Group and Accenture, expanded the scope to include the combined settlement of cash and securities listed on the TSX using a shared ledger.
