Aave Umbrella protocol

safety-module · PageRank 0.0067

Also known as: Umbrella, Aave Safety Module v2

Overview

Aave has introduced Umbrella, a revised safety mechanism to manage protocol bad debt, succeeding the earlier Safety Module design. Participants deposit aTokens—such as aUSDC, aWETH, or aUSDT—into Umbrella, where they keep earning the standard supply yield plus extra incentives from Umbrella. These staked positions face automated slashing: instead of requiring a governance vote after a shortfall occurs, Umbrella uses on-chain deficit data from the relevant reserve to burn staked assets and cover the loss. This creates an automated, per-asset backstop, where stakers accept the risk of slashing in exchange for increased returns.
