It can operate on both public and private networks, such as enterprise permissioned blockchains, and maintains full compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). The codebase was initially contributed by PegaSys, a division of ConsenSys, and is employed in blockchain applications that rely on cryptographic operations and smart contract execution.
