Overview
EigenLayer introduced slashing on Ethereum mainnet on April 17, 2025, fulfilling the protocol's intended functionality. The mechanism enables an AVS to specify compliance criteria for its operators and deduct from their restaked assets if those criteria are breached, introducing economic consequences to restaking beyond mere capital pooling. At the time of activation, the ecosystem included over 190 AVSs, with approximately 40 operating on mainnet, among them LayerZero and Infura, and more than 80,000 restakers contributing over $7 billion in pooled security. The rollout was gradual, with individual AVSs determining their own schedules for enabling slashing.
