Ronin Bridge $625M Hack event
Overview
On 23 March 2022, attackers removed approximately 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC, valued at around $620–625 million, from the Ronin bridge. The bridge is an Ethereum sidechain developed by Sky Mavis for the Axie Infinity game. The breach remained undetected for six days and came to light on 29 March after a user encountered a failed withdrawal. The perpetrators gained access to five of the nine validator keys that protected the bridge. The compromise started through social engineering: a Sky Mavis engineer received a fraudulent job offer via LinkedIn and opened a document containing malware. In April 2022, the U.S. Treasury linked the attack to North Korea’s Lazarus Group. At that time, the incident represented the largest cryptocurrency theft on record.
